چکیده

The use of thermo-mechanical pulping (TMP), an existing and well known technology in the pulp and paper industry, is proposed as a potential pretreatment pathway of agriculture biomass for monomeric sugar production in preparation for further fermentation into alcohol species. Three agricultural biomass types, corn stover, wheat straw, and sweet sorghum bagasse, were pretreated in a TMP unit under two temperature conditions, 160 oC and 170 oC, and hydrolyzed using cellulase at 5, 10, and 20 FPU/g OD biomass. Wheat straw biomass was further pretreated at different conditions including: i) soaking with acetic acid, ii) longer steaming residence time (15 and 30 min), and iii) refined at lower disk gap (0.0508 and 0.1524 mm). Preliminary results showed that carbohydrate conversion increased from 25% to 40% when the TMP temperature was increased from 160 to 170 oC. Carbohydrate conversion was relatively similar for the three biomasses under the same pretreatment conditions and enzyme loading. Acetic acid soaking and refining at a reduce disk gap increases carbohydrate conversion. Further studies within this technological field to identify optimum process and TMP conditions for pretreatment are suggested.

Integration of Kraft Pulping on a Forest Biorefinery by the Addition of a Steam Explosion Pretreatment

Steam explosion has been proposed for a wide range of lignocellulosic applications, including fractionation of biomass, pre-treatment of biomass for ethanol production, or as an alternative to conventional mechanical pulping. Nevertheless, a steam explosion process could also be used as pretreatment before chemical pulping, expecting a reduction in cooking time due to the open structure of the ...

Predicting the most appropriate wood biomass for selected industrial applications: comparison of wood, pulping, and enzymatic treatments using fluorescent-tagged carbohydrate-binding modules

Background Lignocellulosic biomass will progressively become the main source of carbon for a number of products as the Earth's oil reservoirs disappear. Technology for conversion of wood fiber into bioproducts (wood biorefining) continues to flourish, and access to reliable methods for monitoring modification of such fibers is becoming an important issue. Recently, we developed a simple, rapid ...

Thermo-alkaline pre-treatment to solubilise and improve biodegradability of press mud

Thermo-chemical pre-treatment improves the solubilization of the lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, it could improve biogas production from press mud, the solid residue from sugar cane juice filtration which contains up to 85 % insoluble organic matter. The impact of thermo-alkaline pretreatment conditions (100 o C, Ca(OH)2) on press mud was investigated for different times and concentrations,...

Logistics and pretreatment of forest biomass

In large regions of the world, biomass is a very important source of energy. The global bioenergy market based on forest biomass is growing rapidly. About 92 % of the bioenergy in Sweden comes from forests. Biomass from forests is not homogenous. The locations, transport distances, and transport methods, can differ very much and the industries that need biomass as input prefer raw materials wit...

Study on organosolv pulping methods of oil palm biomass

Comparative study on organosolv pulping method have been done by using various mixtures of water and organic solvents as delignifying agents including ethylene glycol-water mixtures, ethanol-water mixtures and acetic acid-water mixtures to extract cellulose from agricultural crop biomass (Oil palm empty-fruit bunches-OPFB). The yield of organosolv pulping with ethylene glycol-water mixture, eth...
